Leon Russell Retires with 30 Years of Service
Leon Russell, an ardent supporter of the conservation movement, retired after 30 years of service to the Hughes County Conservation District. Leon has been a voice for Hughes County natural resource concerns on both the state and national levels since 1975. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that future generations inherit a clean and healthy environment.
He has served on several organizations in the effort to promote the wise use of our soil, water and air. He served as a Board Member on the Ouachita Mountains Resources, Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council. He also served in several positions on the RC&D State Association including as President. He served several years as the Area V Director for the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts (OACD) serving all of southeast Oklahoma.
Leon is a native of the Non community in Southern Hughes County. He is a well known and respected farmer and rancher in Oklahoma. He and his wife Wandine, raised three children on the family farm where they worked polled Hereford cattle.
The District will greatly miss the experience and passion that Leon brought with him as a District Director.
Custom Sprigging Program
The District will be starting it’s annual custom sprigging program on April 1, 2010. Any interested individuals should contact the District to be placed on the waiting list. All areas that will be sprigged on MUST BE disked at least twice and have a rain settled seed bed.
